Past Annual Review

At the end of 2019 I made a New Year Resolution plan. I sat up and wrote a list of goals, how to, when and why achieve them. Honestly it has been productive in some way. I accomplished some of that goal in time and I am quite satisfied. But if I look to all my goals there are many I missed 'cause various impediments - you know, just a worldwide pandemic.

So instead do looking forward to the new year and do the same thing of the end of 2019, I will try to do something called “Past Annual Review”. It is something “similar” to the New Year Resolution but based on something that you already made in the past year and you can keep doing and improving during the new year. The fun part is the Past Annual Review is based on datas and tangible things. So if you are a pragmatic and logical person like me, you will definitely love it.

Ok let’s see how to do a Past Annual Review. It takes 30-60 minutes, depending on how do you track your past year – the more you tracked the lesser it takes. Now just follow the recipe:

  1. Grab a Notion page (I already done one for you – click here). If you don’t use notion you can still copy and paste the template on a document editor or a note app.
  2. Go through your calendar from the last year, looking at every week.
  3. For each week, jot down on the pad any people or activities or commitments that triggered peak positive or negative emotions for that month. Put them in their respective sections.
  4. One you’ve gone through the past year, look at your notepad list and ask “What 20% of each column produced the most reliable or powerful peaks?” (yeah I am obsessed by Pareto Principle).
  5. Based on the answer, take your positive leaders and fill the respect fields. Now schedule more of them in the new upcoming year. Get them on the calendar now. Book things with friends, family and prepay for activities/events/commitments that you know work. It is not real until it’s in the calendar. That’s step one.
  6. Step two is to take your negative leaders, put “NOT-TO-DO LIST” at the top, and put them somewhere you can see them each morning for the first few week of 2021. These are the people and the things you KNOW make you miserable, so don’t put them on your calendar out of obligation, guilt or other nonsense.

Remember it’s not enough to remove the negative. That simply creates a void. Get the positive things on the calendar ASAP, lest they get crowded out by the bullshit and noise that will otherwise fill your days.
